The City of Jacksonville, NC, retained CRJA-IBI Group to develop a conceptual Master Plan for the site known as Sturgeon City.
The existing site, formerly a landfill and municipal garage as well as a treatment plant, is currently inaccessible to the public. It offers commanding frontage on Wilson Bay. The building design includes the reuse and rehabilitation of an existing wastewater treatment plant into exhibition spaces, living machines, and an aquarium. The scope also includes wetland restoration and park development.
The project has received strong support from the City of Jacksonville and the greater community, who welcome the transformation of the plant and adjacent landfill area into an expressive entity that will recall the history of the area and celebrate its marine life and connection to the water.
