One Kendall Square

Cambridge, MA

One Kendall Square is a 676,000 sq ft, mixed-use campus located in the heart of Kendall Square in Cambridge, within walking distance to the MIT campus and the entire Kendall/MIT technology and life-science cluster.

Working with the project architects, CRJA-IBI Group prepared site design solutions to modernize the open spaces of One Kendall Square. The project included the complete redesign of three primary courtyards and the circulation connecting them. The redesigned courtyards feature a large amount of reused, existing paving materials: both a cost effective solution and a sustainable design feature. The mix of paving materials creates a dynamic ground plane of old and new materials that define the space and direct circulation.

In addition to paving solutions, CRJA-IBI Group developed new seating opportunities in each of the gathering spaces where previously seating was limited. A series of custom curricular benches was designed and arranged to promote social interaction in the shade of the existing locust trees.

New plantings were added to frame spaces, direct views and offer seasonal interest. Existing trees were preserved wherever possible to maintain shade and higher canopy. Furnishings throughout the site—new benches, bike racks, lighting, and guardrails—were installed in an effort to upgrade the spaces to today’s standards of quality.
