JMH Comprehensive Cancer Center
Washington County, VA
Consulting to the project architect, CRJA-IBI Group provided full landscape architectural services for a new comprehensive cancer center for Johnston Memorial Hospital in Washington County, Virginia.
The 51,800 sq ft facility was the first building constructed in a master-planned medical campus. In addition to designing softscape conditions, CRJA-IBI Group assisted the design team with layout of vehicular and pedestrian circulation and developed a conceptual design for a healing garden, which patients may view during day-long chemotherapy treatment. The private garden features a soothing mix of textures, forms and colors to assist in the healing process, while screening views into the treatment rooms from the surrounding parking area. Sited atop a windy knoll on land used previously for agricultural purposes, the new facility features limited manicured areas and use of meadow grasses and native plantings consistent with an open farm field.
