The Health Design Assessment™ (HDA)
Bill Bruce, Principal in our Knoxville, TN office has been working for a number of years with Michelle Eichinger, Principal of Designing4Health, a firm Bill had helped found in Atlanta. Michelle’s background is in public health and policy, with a focus on public health as it relates to the built environment, land use planning and development policy. Earlier in her career she worked as a subject matter expert at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

We saw disadvantages to Health Impact Assessments that were done on development projects for municipalities in that they highlight not only the positive but the negative health impact of projects. And in response to this, created a process called a Health Design Assessment.
What is Health Design Assessment™?
The HDA is a process used on a project that examines both quantitative and qualitative local health data and interprets this data to guide planning and design to mitigate negative health issues. The HDA targets users of projects who may be members of a community, employees, and/or patients. So far, we’ve successfully used the HDA in a variety of projects, including healthcare facilities. The HDA has also been instrumental in securing grants and funding for project implementation, to help carry a project beyond schematic design. Clients love this process as it helps provide data to justify design decisions. It really helps our team stand out and approach the design process in a unique and more educated way.
